Our Services

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy (or Talk Therapy), is a way to help those who are currently facing difficulties in emotions, stress, relationships, or mental disorders such as depression or anxiety.

Our clinical psychologists will help clients to understand their  own emotions and thoughts, and to share methods to help clients face, cope and manage their emotions and thoughts. The main goal of psychotherapy is to assist clients to establish an enjoyable and fulfilling life based on their personal values.

The Process

During the first session (90 minutes), our clinical psychologists will provide clients assessment and consultation. They will understand the full picture of the client’s situation and current concerns. Then they will discuss with the clients regarding their assessment, and the direction of therapy for subsequent sessions. If time permits, they will also share some methods for clients to adjust and manage their thoughts and emotions.

For the subsequent sessions (60 minutes), clinical psychologists will conduct the therapy based on the direction that was agreed upon. The course of therapy will be personalised to each client’s needs to achieve personal goals.

About Us

How It All Started

“Where there is people,
there is a need for psychology.”

MY Psychology, Malaysia’s 1st Psychology Education Platform was created by a group of psychology undergraduates back in 2014 with the vision to make psychology accessible to everyone. We started off by making fun youtube videos about psychology, then expanded to sharing contents on social media platforms such as Facebook, reaching up to 200k followers.

Fast forward to 2019, MY Psychological Centre was founded in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, providing psychotherapy/counselling services and corporate talks/workshops about psychological well-being. Mr. Chong was one of the principal clinical psychologists, having the privilege to serve the community as a mental health professional.

Despite being contented with his career in KL, Mr. Chong realised that there is a need to increase the psychological literacy in his hometown, Sabah and help is definitely not as accessible as compared to in KL. With that consideration, he decided to return to Kota Kinabalu to serve his fellow Sabahans. And that’s how MY Psychology KK comes by.

MY Psychology KK is founded in 2022 to provide psychotherapy and counselling services to the people of Sabah. Apart from that, we will continue to preach the spirit of MY Psychology, to “learn, share, apply”, to make psychology accessible to everyone and to increase mental health awareness as a whole.

Psychotherapy FAQ

Psychotherapy (or Talk Therapy), is a way to help those who are currently facing difficulties in emotions, stress, relationships, or mental disorders such as depression or anxiety. It is a process of helping clients to understand how their thoughts and feelings influence their behaviours and relationship with others. With psychotherapy, clients would be able to better understand themselves and lead a valuable and satisfying life.

Psychotherapy is able to help with the situations as below:

  • Mental distress such as depression, anxiety etc
  • Major life changes such as grief and loss and trauma-related events
  • Relationship issues
  • Mental health issues in teens and children including school phobia, self-harm etc
  • Self-exploration and personal growth

As concerns vary individually, if unsure that psychotherapy would be able to help with your condition, feel free to drop us a Whatsapp message for enquiries.

We do not provide hypnotherapy. However, our clinical psychologist is trained and qualified to incorporate hypnotic techniques in psychotherapy. It is important to know that hypnosis is only one of the many subtechniques used in psychotherapy, which is mostly used for pain management and relaxation.

It is recommended for clients to seek help from qualified mental health professionals (with years of theory and clinical training in university) who are trained in evidenced-based therapeutic modalities such as Person-Centered, Cognitive-Behavourital Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance-Commitment Therapy(ACT). Our clinical psychologist will first assess your condition thoroughly to conduct psychotherapy with therapeutic modalities that are most suited to your needs. It is not common that a submethod such as hypnosis is used solely throughout your process of psychotherapy.

During the first 90-minute session, our clinical psychologist will provide you with assessment and consultation. He/She will first understand the full picture of your situation and current concerns to have an accurate assessment/diagnosis. Then they will thoroughly explain the results of your assessment and the direction of therapy for subsequent sessions. If time permits, they will also share some methods for clients to adjust and manage their thoughts and emotions.

This will depend on the complexity of your concerns and situation. After the first session, our clinical psychologist will provide an assessment and discuss with you on what to do next, and they might also suggest the frequency of the subsequent sessions to you. For some, it will only require 2-3 sessions, while others may need up to 6-8 sessions or above. Of course, you have the right to decide on whether to have another session and how long in between. This can be discussed with your psychologist to suit your timings
