Which mental health professional should I see?

You do not need to make this decision alone. The best starting point depends on your concerns, goals, age, health needs and whether medication or specialised assessment may be required.

Clinical psychologist

Clinical psychologists assess and provide psychological therapy for emotional, behavioural and mental health concerns. Some also conduct formal cognitive, learning or neurodevelopmental assessments.

Registered counsellor

Counsellors support people with emotional, relationship, adjustment and life concerns using counselling approaches within their training and professional scope.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialising in mental health. Psychiatrists can provide medical assessment, diagnose and prescribe medication where appropriate.

Allied therapists

Speech, play and music therapists address specific communication, developmental, emotional or participation needs according to their professional discipline and training.

Start with the main question

Tell the service what is happening, who needs help and what you hope to understand or change. A responsible team should guide you towards an appropriate professional or refer elsewhere when necessary.

Still unsure?
