What happens in your first therapy session?

Feeling uncertain before a first appointment is normal. You are not expected to arrive with a perfect explanation or know exactly what you need.

The conversation begins with what matters to you

Your psychologist may ask what brought you in, how long the difficulty has been present and how it affects daily life. You can share at your own pace and say when a topic feels difficult.

You will discuss history and context

Current concerns often make more sense alongside health, relationships, work or study, family experiences, sleep and previous support. The purpose is to understand the whole picture—not to judge you.

Confidentiality is explained

Your professional will explain how information is protected and the limited circumstances involving safety or legal obligations where confidentiality may need to be addressed.

You can ask questions

You may ask about the therapist’s approach, session frequency, goals, fees or anything that would help you make an informed decision.

The next step is collaborative

The first meeting may lead to therapy, further assessment, a referral or practical recommendations. You remain involved in deciding what happens next.

Would it help to talk with someone?

Our team can match you with a suitable professional and explain the first step.
