Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals of all ages. Symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, significantly interfering with daily functioning and development. Therefore, its impact can extend beyond academic or work settings to personal relationships and self-esteem.

There are three subtypes: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive, and combined. Individuals with the predominantly inattentive subtype often struggle with focusing, organizing tasks, and paying attention to details. Those with the predominantly hyperactive/impulsive subtype may exhibit restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty staying seated, impulsive decision-making, and interrupting others. The combined subtype displays a mix of both sets of symptoms.

Managing ADHD involves a multifaceted approach that may include:

a. Diagnosis and Treatment: A comprehensive evaluation from clinical psychologists or psychiatrists is needed for an accurate diagnosis. Treatment options may include medication, behavioural therapy, psychoeducation, and counselling. These interventions can help individuals develop coping strategies, improve executive functioning skills, and address emotional and behavioral challenges.

b. Structure and Routine: Establishing predictable routines, organising tasks, and breaking them into manageable steps can help individuals maintain focus and manage time effectively.

c. Support and Accommodations: Open communication with teachers, employers, and loved ones is crucial. Discussing specific needs and exploring reasonable accommodations can secure the support they require to thrive.

d. Self-Care and Well-being: Prioritising self-care, such as exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet, can contribute to improved focus, mood regulation, and overall well-being. Mindfulness practices, relaxation techniques, and stress management strategies can also be beneficial.

e. Capitalizing on Strengths: Identifying and nurturing the unique strengths associated with ADHD, such as creativity, high energy levels, and out-of-the-box thinking, can lead to fulfilling pursuits and achievements.

ADHD presents a set of challenges that can impact individuals across different domains of life. By going for assessments, fostering understanding, providing support, and implementing effective strategies, we can help individuals with ADHD unlock their potential and thrive.
